2021-11-12 Nerd Roundup
Really happy to have Scott Ambler on this week along with Jon Kern. Scott is the Vice President and Chief Scientist of Disciplined Agile at the Project Management Institute. Because Scott was the New Guy, we told Scott he had to buy lunch and beer for the gang. I don't think he bought it though. Maybe we should have asked for donuts?
Scott's yet another super-smart friend of mine and I've been looking forward to having him on the show for some time now. Scott and I probably disagree about most things politically, but we both love tech, product management, and bad dad jokes. I love hanging out with people with differing opinions who are relaxed and easy-going. Gives me a better chance of figuring out where I'm wrong and could get better.
STORY | BUT WHY? |
These Parents Built a School App. Then the City Called the Cops | It seems like once the data leaves your fingertips, everybody owns it but you, even when its provided in a public API |
Opening This Article Voids Warranty | Some nice takes on the right-to-repair argument. Especially like the brick-thru-window comment on HN |
Explaining Machine Learning Models: A Non-Technical Guide to Interpreting SHAP Analyses | And the paradigm is to provide us answers without reasoning. I do not understand this article, but I need to. So many of our AI conversations revolve around the explanatory (or lack thereof) power of AI. We can't have a faith-based techno future |
Science Publisher Retracts 44 Papers for Being Utter Nonsense | We do science a great disservice by putting all sorts of things under the "science" rubric. If it's non-reproducible, it shouldn't be science. Otherwise, it's just a race to the bootom, where these kinds of things live "“Simulation of sea surface temperature based on non-sampling error and psychological intervention of music education”" |
Escaping cosmology’s failing paradigm | Spider sense (and history) tells me that figuring out what's next means putting it all on the table, not just tweaking some numbers here or there |
What I Learned From Losing $200 Million | Nice story, nice conclusion: " [I learned]...to fully appreciate how unlike physics markets are, how crucial to outcomes other people and luck are, and how, no matter how hard I worked or how much I prepared, there would always be some things I couldn’t completely fathom. " |
Nuclear Power Is the Best Climate-Change Solution by Far | We've known this for 40+ years and have done nothing about it. Perhaps a bit of honest introspection will prevent us going yet another 40+ years, maybe with some new tech? |
Helion | Sam Altman drops $375M into fusion startup Helion and continues to sing their praises. It's no longer in 20 years, now it's who's going to win the fusion race? |
WebFrame | Both cool and awful at the same time. Great work, but over and over again devs go down this same path "Why can't I take my dev skills and make the lives of other devs easy?" and it always ends up in either oblivion or pain |
Ford's new custom electric pickup truck is a blast from the pas | Cool ride, dude! |
Why testicles have tastebuds | Somebody has to ask these questions |
The Joy of Collecting Stamps From Countries That Don’t Really Exist | Funny |
